This lap combines high-purity cerium oxide (99.9%) with durable epoxy resin, making it ideal for polishing opals as well as minerals in the quartz, feldspar, and beryl families.
Key Details:
- Break-In Process: The lap may need to be prepared before use. Run it at medium speed with a steady water drip, and gently burnish the surface using 240-grit wet-dry sandpaper for 3–5 seconds. Repeat in reverse direction. The goal is to lightly roughen the surface to release the embedded cerium oxide powder.
- Moisture Requirements: Avoid running the lap dry. It only needs to be slightly moist for optimal performance. Use a fine mist spray bottle or maintain a slow water drip (around 1 drop every 3 seconds).
- Polishing Tips: If polishing slows, apply a small amount of cerium oxide. Gearloose’s high-purity cerium oxide crayon (available at gearloose.co) is highly recommended.
- Optimal Lap Speed: Between 60 and 300 RPM.
- Water Adjustment: For best results, add a small amount of baking soda to your water supply to increase the pH to a slightly alkaline level (pH: 8).
Specifications:
- Diameter: 8" (203 mm)
- Arbor Hole: 0.5" (12.7 mm)
- Cerium Compound Layer Thickness: 1.5 mm
- Total Lap Thickness: Approximately 0.3" (7.5 mm)
Designed and manufactured by Allan Lindberg (Lindberg Laps), this lap ensures premium polishing results for your projects.
