Moissanite Heating
Method 1: Heating in an Argon Atmosphere
-
Preparation:
- Place the moissanite in a heat-resistant container (steel or clay).
- Wrap the stone in thick layers of ash and sand to slow down the heating and cooling rates, which helps avoid thermal shock.
-
Heating:
- Heat the moissanite to around 850°C in an Argon atmosphere. This temperature is generally effective for reducing yellowing.
-
Cooling:
- Allow the stone to cool down slowly. Rapid cooling can cause damage or cracking.
-
Cleaning:
- After heating, clean the moissanite thoroughly using an ultrasonic cleaner and steaming to remove any residues and restore the stone's brilliance.
Method 2: Direct Torch Heating (Recommended for Hobbyists)
As a hobbyist, you may not have access to an Argon environment. In this case, the direct torch method is a practical alternative:
-
Preparation:
- Clean the moissanite thoroughly to remove any contaminants using an ultrasonic cleaner and steaming.
-
Heating:
- Use a torch that can reach 1300°C. Apply the heat evenly and gradually to the stone to avoid thermal shock. Monitor the temperature closely.
-
Cooling:
- Allow the moissanite to cool down slowly. Rapid cooling can cause the stone to crack or shatter.
-
Safety:
- Ensure you are working in a well-ventilated area and using appropriate safety gear, such as heat-resistant gloves and eye protection.
